Lighting A Modern Fireplace In Your Home

August 10, 2020

This weeks creativity burst is inspired by a couple of clients, at totally opposite ends of the lighting spectrum.  We've been working on creating a "permanent" eternal flame for a church out in country Victoria over the last few weeks - and last night, we completed the build, and if I do say so myself - it's pretty awesome!  Candlelight that is more candle than a real candle!  Might seem like a strange thing to make - but when your parishioners are more 60's than 30's and your Eternal Flame is hung about 5M above the ground, at some point, it simply becomes dangerous to send someone up a ladder a few times a week to light the candle!

All of which had my mind in the world of flames - fake and real - and how to best light them and their surrounds.  Then a lovely new couple came in this week for a design in their new home and so my search for the perfect "inspiration" images for lighting a modern fireplace began...

The questions when lighting a "living breathing" feature like a fire, are - do we light the fire surround? Add decorative features above the fire? create drama with texture? or allow the fire to take centre stage and hide all of the general lighting in the room away into the architecture?  Of course it all depends on the style of the home, and what my clients are hoping to see in that space - but it's endless fun to play with the different styles and effects and imagine how they might enhance a room...
